World Environment Day 2026 – Reconnecting Place Names with Nature .

The “Heritage Place-name Plant Conservation Project,” proposed by Dr. Joemon Jacob on behalf of KSCSTE–JNTBGRI at a meeting held at Peringammala Grama Panchayat, was implemented by the Panchayat through a series of extensive programmes on June 5, 2026 (World Environment Day) to promote biodiversity conservation and environmental protection. The core idea of the initiative was to rediscover the natural heritage embedded in local place names.

The main objective of the project was to identify place names within the Panchayat that are associated with plants, scientifically determine the tree species that once existed in those locations but have disappeared over time, and restore them through replanting. This innovative model integrates local history, geography, and traditional knowledge with biodiversity conservation and serves as an example that other local self-government institutions can emulate.

The project was inaugurated with the planting of an Ilavu sapling at Ilavupalam Junction by Vamanapuram MLA Sudheesh Kumar Palode. Subsequently, under the leadership of Panchayat President M. Arun Kumar, and with the participation of Dr. Jothish P. S., Dr. Joemon Jacob, Dr. Abdul Jabbar, and other JNTBGRI scientists, saplings of the tree species after which the places are named were planted at 23 locations, including Thannimoode, Potto Maavu, Njaranneeli, Kattadimukku, Plamoodu, Vittikavu, Chennellimoode, and Arayakunnu.

Peringammala’s effort to reclaim nature through place names represents a novel and inspiring approach to environmental conservation, opening a new pathway for biodiversity restoration and community engagement.
