  • Launching of the ‘Green Initiative, Kerala’ project of KSCSTE by planting Madhuca diplostemon, the Critically Endangered tree rediscovered by JNTBGRI taxonomists after a hiatus of 184 years

Madhuca diplostemon (C.B.Clarke) P.Royen of the family Sapotaceae is an IUCN Red listed Threatened species of the Western Ghats, first reported by Robert Wight in 1835 (Wight’s identification of the specimen was wrong, but C.B. Clarke in 1897 and P. Royen in 1960 correctly identified the species). For 184 years, this tree species was believed to be extinct until rediscovered by Dr. Shailajakumari S, Dr. Santhosh Kumar E S, Dr. Sreekala A K et al of JNTBGRI in 2019 from the sacred grove of Koonayil Ayiradevi Siva Temple at Paravoor of Kollam district. The IUCN has included it in the ‘Endangered’ species list.

The JNTBGRI team later collected a few seeds and grew them under special conditions, and so far could develop only a single seedling. This two-and-a-half year old seedling, the second known plant of the species, is selected for planting on the World Environment Day, June 5, 2023 at the Govt. Model Boys Higher Secondary School campus by the Honourable Chief Minister of Kerala.
