Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust Renaissance Lecture held at JNTBGRI

   Vakkom Abdul Khader Moulavi was a social reformer, teacher, writer, scholar, journalist and freedom fighter. He was the founder and publisher of the newspaper Swadeshabhimani. To commemorate the contributions of the great reformer, the ‘Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust’ is conducting various activities across the state and the Lecture Series on ‘Renaissance in Kerala’ is an important event in this respect. The topic of this year’s renaissance lecture was ‘Empowerment of the Poor in Kerala amidst Rise and Fall of Scientific Temper’ and was delivered by Prof. V.K. Damodaran on August 19th, Saturday, at JNTBGRI, Palode.

The decay that has set in different walks of the society has called for a renaissance, especially in the scientific sector and the topic of this year addresses a contemporary and socially relevant issue. Prof. V.K. Damodaran is a vastly experienced, globally-renowned expert in the academic field especially in energy related area. His experience in science and technology spans over half a century, spreading across teaching, industry and techno-managerial positions and international consultancy. He was also the Director of Science, Technology and Environment, Govt of Kerala during 1987-95.


The delegates reached JNTBGRI at 11.30 am August 19th, Saturday and visited the garden till 1.30 pm. The programme started at JNTBGRI auditorium at 3.00pm with a welcome address by Dr. Kayamkulam Yoonus, Secretary, VMFT and an introduction about the programme by Sri. A Suhair, Chairman, VMFT. The presidential address was given by Dr.A.G. Pandurangan, Director, JNTBGRI. He emphasised the importance of scientific temper in a developing society and recalled the contributions of Prof.V.K. Damodaran in the field. Sri. N.A. Bashir, President, Iqbal College Trust, Peringammala gave felicitation. Renaissance Lecture on the topic ‘Empowerment of the Poor in Kerala amidst Rise and Fall of Scientific Temper’ was presented by Prof. V.K. Damodaran. The talk was followed by an active discussion among the audience. The programme concluded at 5.00 pm with vote of thanks by Dr. K.B. Rameshkumar, Scientist, JNTBGRI.

The programme was attended by around 120 delegates consisting college students and general public and was given wide publicity through the media. The presentation emphasised on the importance of a scientific renaissance that empower the downtrodden and analysed the present social system and the influence of science in upliftment of the poor. The deliberations during the programme will definitely help to mould strategies for planning long term scientific policies relevant to the states social scenario.
