Inspiration behind the centre:
Dr. M. Thangavelu (1921-2009)
The Sub-Centre was established through the generous contribution and visionary support of Dr. Mahalingam Thangavelu, who donated nearly 10 acres of land and buildings for promoting education, research, and human resource development in Plant Sciences.
His farsighted commitment towards scientific advancement and societal development laid the foundation for this centre, which continues to serve students, researchers, and the scientific community.
The institute gratefully acknowledges the invaluable support and magnanimous contribution of Dr. Mahalingam Thangavelu towards the establishment of the Sub-Centre. His generosity and vision continue to inspire the mission and activities of the institution.
Vision:
To establish STEC-JNTBGRI as a self-sustainable nodal Centre for multidisciplinaryresearch, source of plant derived products and large scale cultivation demonstration of high value ornamental plants and human resource development.
Objectives:
- Development of Plant & fungal databases and database on plant compounds and their therapeutic uses to support bioinformatics.
- Validation of drug activity in selected plants and screening of phytochemicals through insilico and invitro means.
- Maintenance and multiplication of plants, production of quality planting materials and generation of income through the sale of plants, cut flowers and value added products made out of them.
- Human resource development by imparting training and guidance in Bioinformatics and plant cultivation practices.
Functional units:
- Bioinformatics unit under Biotechnology & Bioinformatics division
- Shreshta Centre for Phytochemical Nano technology under Phytochemistry division
- Garden related activities and maintenance of existing coconut and mango plants.
Facilities and Services:
The Sub-Centre provides advanced research, training, and consultancy support in the fields of Plant Sciences, Bioinformatics, Biodiversity Informatics, and allied areas
- Research facilities for Ph.D.,Postgraduate(PG), and Undergraduate(UG) students in the field of Bioinformatics.
- Computational support for biological data analysis, molecular studies, and biodiversity-related research.
- Guidance and mentoring for student research projects, dissertations, and academic collaborations.
Training programmes offered:
- Training programmes in Bioinformatics and allied areas for Teachers,Researchers,
Students and Technical personnel - Hands-on exposure to bioinformatics tools,databases,and computational techniques.
- Phytochemical profiling and insilico screening against communicable diseases like Dengue, SARS CoV-2, Tuberculosis etc.
