- Exploration and documentation of the floristic wealth of India, especially the Western Ghats.
- Maintaining a herbarium as a resource for botanical research.
- Undertaking revisionary studies on the flora of India.
- Studying phytogeography, endemism, specialized habitats and threatened taxa.
- Studying the dynamics and functioning of various ecosystems.
- Assisting authorities on various biodiversity issues with a broad objective of conserving plant genetic resources for sustainable utilization
